Leland Gossett is part of “The Greatest Generation” noted by author and former news anchor Tom Brokaw.

Leland, a World War II Navy veteran who traveled to England and Iceland while serving in the Atlantic from 1943 to 1946, Leland continues to serve his country ashore. For the past 22 years, he has been a veteran bugler for military funerals in the community. Last year, he played “Taps” at 70 military funerals. In one year, he was the bugler for 116 military funerals.

While he has provided the final salute for hundreds of local veterans, he was saluted Friday when he was named the Logansport Citizen of the Week by Mayor Dave Kitchell.

“At age 92, he continues to show his passion for our country and the men and women who honorably served it,” Mayor Kitchell said. “The impact of serving in the military is not only evident for those who are honored with military rites at funerals, but their loved ones who request other veterans to perform them. Many relatives follow in their footsteps and serve in the military. We’re fortunate to have dedicated veterans like Leland who made Logansport their permanent home.”

Leland is a native of Shelby County and his father was a school principal who served the former Monterey School System in Pulaski County at one point. Leland came to Logansport in 1965 and was employed at the former R-B-M plant on Godfrey Street. He later spent much of his career working in Kokomo and worked for a short time at a plant in Tennessee before retiring.
