KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Ninety-one mayors from nearly 40 states are invited guests of the non-partisan Mayors Conference on Entrepreneurship this week.

The conference is sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation and is held this year in Kansas City, Mo.

Logansport Mayor Dave Kitchell and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg are the only mayors who will be participating from Indiana. The mayors of New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Seattle also are among the 91.

Mayor Dave Kitchell said it’s an honor to be chosen for the conference for the third straight year.

“I’ve been able to take away many great ideas from this conference as well as meet many progressive mayors who are doing some great things across the country,” Kitchell said. “In Logansport, we’re making a renewed commitment to examining what we can do to grow our local economy through innovation and to promote entrepreneurship in schools.”

Recently, the mayor was among local officials who judged the first entrepreneurship competition at Logansport Junior High School. The mayor said it was a great experience for students and he hopes more schools will offer pitch competitions.

“We have to take stock of our entrepreneurship community and really determine what the appropriate things we need to do are in terms of providing maker space, incubators or other facilities and programs that will promote innovation.”

According to information provided by the conference, Logansport’s economy has nearly four times the production sector as the national per capita average and double the materials movement sector. While the city’s low-income jobs are slightly higher than the national average, its middle-income job percentage is 46 percent, which is 10 percent higher than the national average.

The foundation was founded by the late Ewing Kauffman, a pharmaceutical entrepreneur who also was the owner of the Kansas City Royals Major League Baseball team
