KOKOMO, Ind. –  Filing for financial aid can be an intimidating process.

It doesn’t have to be, with free assistance offered at College Goal Sunday, set for 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, November 3, in the Indiana University Kokomo Library, 2300 S. Washington St.

“Our financial aid team will be there to offer their expertise and support, as they walk through the process,” said Kelsey Richey, a financial aid counselor leading College Goal Sunday. “We encourage anyone who hopes to receive financial aid to attend, and get a head start on preparing for the 2020 to 2021 school year.”

IU Kokomo is one of 37 sites statewide helping college-bound students and their families open the door to financial aid, by assisting with filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, scholarships, and student loans at most colleges, universities, and vocational/technical schools nationwide. It must be filed by April 15, 2020, to be eligible for Indiana financial aid.

Richey noted the event is open to all high school seniors and current college students, not just those considering IU Kokomo. Students enrolled in the 21st Century Scholars program are especially encouraged to attend, as they must submit a completed FAFSA form on time to fulfill their pledge and receive state funds to cover tuition and fees for eight semesters.

Students should attend with a parent or guardian. Parents should bring their completed 2018 IRS 1040 tax returns, W-2 forms, and other 2018 income and benefits information. Students who worked last year should bring their income information as well. Students age 24 and older may attend alone and bring their own completed tax paperwork.

Families are encouraged to apply for their U.S. Department of Education FSA ID at fsaid.ed.gov before attending.

Students who attend College Goal Sunday and submit a completed evaluation form will be entered in a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship. An additional College Goal Sunday is planned February 23, 2020.

The event is free, and free parking is available on campus. For more information go to CollegeGoalSunday.org.
