January 20, 2020 is 25th Anniversary of MLK Day of Service

Jan. 20, 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the MLK Day of Service. Americans first observed Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1986, after legislation was signed in 1983 to mark the birthday of Dr. King as a federal holiday. In 1994, the third Monday in January was designed as a national day of service, and the Corporation for National and Community Service was charged with leading the effort. Find more info here.

The Cass County Government Building will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20, 2020.

All Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicle (BMV) branches will be closed Saturday, Jan. 18 through Monday, Jan. 20 in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.  All branches will resume regularly scheduled business hours on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Find a complete list of branch locations  or a 24-hour BMV Connect kiosk.

USPS will be closed on Monday, January 20 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The Cass County Bar Association is hosting its annual Talk to a Lawyer Day on January 20, 2020. The community is invited to call the Cass County Circuit Court between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. January 20, 2020 with any legal questions they may have. The Cass County Circuit Court number is (574) 753-7730.  Phone calls will be answered on a first call, first served basis and will directed to an attorney from the Cass County Bar Association.


Indiana University Kokomo will be closed Monday, January 20, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and is co-sponsoring some community events.

The Library, Cougar Country Café, Ground Up Café, the bookstore, and the Art Gallery will all be closed. The Cole Fitness Center will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The campus will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday, January 21.

IU Kokomo and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Omicron Phi Omega Chapter will co-sponsor a series of free events honoring King.

On Saturday, January 18, Second Missionary Baptist Church, 819 N. Apperson Way, will host its 2020 youth celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It includes free activities and lunch for youth and adults.

Also at Second Missionary Baptist Church, the community is invited to an ecumenical service at 11 a.m. Monday, January 20. Guest speaker is Rev. Dr. Philip K. James, pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Indianapolis.

Wednesday, January 22, IU Kokomo will host a screening of American Son, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium. The film delves into the tensions within police-community relations, interracial relations, and families. Snacks will be provided.

Finally, children from F. D. Reese Christian Academy will present their annual Martin Luther King Day performance at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. February 23, in the Kelley Student Center Commons.
