On June 29 at approximately 6:47 a.m., deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Department responded to a serious crash on US 35 just north of CR 300 S between Anoka Acres Mobile Home Park and Maple Lawn Village Mobile Home Park involving two passenger vehicles.
Deputy Mike Shannon stated that witnesses said a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire driven by James Champ, 18, of Walton, was traveling north on US 35 when it traveled left of center and struck a southbound vehicle. The vehicle traveling south on US 35 was a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Ubertino J. Ramirez, 64, of Logansport. Ramirez’s vehicle came to rest off the west side of the roadway. Champ’s vehicle came to rest in the southbound lane of traffic. Deputy Shannon said Champ’s vehicle hydroplaned on the wet roadway before going left of center and striking the southbound Ramirez vehicle.
Ramirez and two passengers were transported to Logansport Memorial Hospital by Prompt Ambulance. Ramirez received serious leg injuries and had to be extracted from his vehicle by District 1 Fire and Walton Fire. He was transported later to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne by Good Samaritan helicopter.
One front seat passenger in Ramirez’ vehicle, Reyna Richards, 61, also had a leg injury and was being treated at Memorial Hospital.
The back seat passenger, Roberto T. Zavala, 48, was being treated for complaint of pain.
Champ refused treatment at the scene.
Both vehicles were a total loss.
Both lanes of US 35 were closed for a short time this morning. Traffic was routed around the crash scene while wrecker crews cleared the debris from the road scene.
The accident is being investigated by Deputy Mike Shannon with the Cass County Sheriff’s Department. The Cass County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by Prompt Ambulance Service, District 1 Fire and Walton Fire.
