quinonesKOKOMO, Ind. – John Quiñones, a son of Latino migrant workers who grew up to become an Emmy Award-winning television reporter and host, is coming to Kokomo in January as guest speaker for Ivy Tech Community College’s annual “Doing the Dream” celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Quiñones, the Emmy Award-winning co-anchor of ABC newsmagazine Primetime, is best known for his work on What Would You Do?, one of the highest-rated newsmagazine franchises in recent years. He will speak with community members at a banquet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, and with area high school and college students at a free convocation the next morning. Both events will be in the Kokomo Event & Conference Center, 1500 N. Reed Road.

“We are excited to be able to feature John Quiñones as we celebrate ‘Doing the Dream 2016,’” said David Bathe, chancellor of Ivy Tech’s Kokomo and Lafayette Region. “With his ability to share his life story – rising from poverty to a nearly 30-year career with the ABC network – and his real understanding of the challenges of immigration and integration, he is known as a compelling and inspiring speaker.”

Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) and the Community Foundation of Howard County are serving as lead sponsors for the “Doing the Dream” celebration with $5,000 donations to support participation by a noted speaker. This is the fourth year for NIPSCO’s participation and the third year for the Community Foundation grant.

Kelly Karickhoff, executive director of Resource Development for Ivy Tech’s Kokomo Region, said additional support is being sought. She is contacting individuals, organizations and businesses in the region with information about sponsorship opportunities to further help underwrite the cost of the programming.

“This includes support of the Jan. 29 convocation when we expect 1,000 students will have the chance to hear Mr. Quiñones’ message,” Karickhoff continued. “Area school superintendents have been invited to bring their students to the free convocation and reservations are being taken on a first come-first served basis up to the 1,000-student limit.”

More information about sponsorship opportunities is available by contacting Karickhoff at 765-252-5501 or kkarickhoff@ivytech.edu.
