Murder, arson charges filed in New Year’s Day fire

On January 1, 2016 at 1:22 a.m. Logansport Fire & Police Department were dispatched to a residential structure fire at 1100  1/2 High Street in Logansport. Upon their arrival fire and police reported that smoke and flames were coming from the west upstairs portion of the residence. Inside the resident of 1100 1/2 which is the upstairs west apartment, firefighters located the victim, Michele Jones, unresponsive. Firefighters pulled Jones from the residence and she was transported by ambulance to Logansport Memorial Hospital. Jones was transported via helicopter to St. Joseph Hospital Burn Unit in Ft. Wayne, Indiana later that morning.

Jones died the next day, January 2, as result of her injuries sustained in the fire.

The case has been under investigation b the Logansport Police Department 1st Sgt. Dan Frye, Logansport Fire Department Investigator Jason Miller and the Indiana State Fire Marshall’s Office.

On January 3, David Lee Hicks, who was in a relationship with the victim, Ms. Jones, at the time of the fire, was interviewed in Howard County.

On March 29, Hicks was interviewed a 2nd time in Jonesborough, TN.

The case was turned over to the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office on April 1.

A charging information was filed by the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office on Monday, April 4, charging Hicks for murder and arson (level 2 and level 4 felony). Probable cause was found in Cass County Superior Court II for these charges and an arrest warrant was issued.

The case is still under investigation by the Logansport Police & Fire Departments and Cass County Prosecutor’s Office. An information or indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trail at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
