KOKOMO, Ind. — Ivy Tech Community College is offering training opportunities in welding and advanced manufacturing this summer, courses that will prepare students for good-paying, in-demand skilled industrial jobs in north central Indiana.
Certified Production Technician
The MSSC Certified Production Technician (CPT) program is a five-week training program offered by Ivy Tech Community College that prepares students for certification in the advanced manufacturing skills needed to succeed in the high-growth, technical jobs of the 21st Century. The program will start June 27 and meet from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Deanna McMillan, an Ivy Tech adjunct faculty member who earned bachelor, master and doctoral degrees in engineering and is a certified MSSC CPT instructor, will lead the class.
The Certified Production Technician (CPT) course, offered under the auspices of the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC), will meet in Kokomo. Students who pass the four manufacturing-related modules – manufacturing process and production, quality and continuous improvement, maintenance awareness, and safety – achieve CPT certification.
Employers also can benefit by allowing current employees to upgrade and certify their skills through this program, according to Stephanie Reitan, program manager for Ivy Tech’s Corporate College in Kokomo.
AWS Welding Preparation
Ivy Tech also is offering the 10-week American Welding Society (AWS) 3G Carbon Steel Welding Preparation course, which prepares students for certifications required for gainful employment as a welder. This class also will meet in Kokomo and will be taught by a welding inspector certified by the American Society of Welding. The class will meet from 8 a.m. to noon Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from July 11 through Sept. 16
The program prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to join or cut metal surfaces. This includes instruction in arc welding, resistance welding, brazing and soldering, cutting, high-energy beam welding and cutting, solid state welding, ferrous and non-ferrous materials, oxidation-reduction reactions, welding metallurgy, welding processes and heat treating, structural design, safety, and applicable codes and standards. The program covers the welding of ferrous metals utilizing a variety of metallic manual welding methods and techniques and emphasizes safety hazards and safe practices in arc welding.
