KOKOMO, Ind. — Ivy Tech Community College Kokomo Region – which includes campuses and instructional sites in Kokomo, Logansport, Peru, Wabash, and Rochester – celebrated its 2016 commencement Saturday, May 7. Hundreds of family members and friends gathered as the College conferred more than 1,000 degrees and certificates on more than 600 recipients.
David Bathe, chancellor of Ivy Tech’s Kokomo and Lafayette Region, congratulated the graduates for the years of study, sacrifice and effort represented in these degrees and credentials.
“Today’s ceremony gives Ivy Tech faculty and staff an opportunity to acknowledge their pride in what these students have accomplished and how they have prepared themselves for the challenges of the future,” Bathe said. “The ceremony also is an opportunity to acknowledge the support of family and friends who helped make those accomplishments possible.”
Brandi McCann of Wabash, a December graduate, represented the graduates as student speaker at the commencement. While balancing responsibilities as a daughter, a wife and the mother of two young children, she earned her Associate of Applied Science degree in Paralegal Studies at Ivy Tech, graduating with summa cum laude honors and membership in Phi Theta Kappa Academic Honor Society. Now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in history and political science at Indiana University Kokomo, her goal is to attend IU’s Robert H. McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis on her way to becoming a public interest attorney.
Also honored during Saturday’s ceremonies were Jean Neel, vice president of Haynes International, recipient of an honorary Associate of Science in College and Community Service degree in recognition of her contributions to the College, its students and the communities served by Kokomo Region; Lisa Price, an assistant professor in the region’s School of Nursing, recipient of the President’s Award for Excellence in Instruction; Michael Dunivan, adjunct instructor in Culinary Arts, recipient of the Adjunct Faculty Award for Excellence in Instruction; Karen McCoy, a 1989 Ivy Tech graduate who now serves as operations manager of the Greater Kokomo Economic Alliance and Greater Kokomo Chamber of Commerce, recipient of the Alumni Achievement Award; and graduating student Jacob Ramsey, recipient of the Dr. Pam Lewis Award for Academic Excellence.
