Three power proposals for LMU moving forward

Last Updated on May 24, 2016 by cassnetwork

citysealThe process for determining what electric source will power the Logansport Municipal Utilities moved another step forward Tuesday.

Logansport Mayor Dave Kitchell says a joint executive session with the Logansport City Council and Logansport Utility Service Board lasted 2 ½ hours.

“There is a consensus to move forward with three of the six proposals,” Kitchell said. “In the next few days, our council and utility officials and myself will meet to discuss our next steps. Although we initially had planned on a public meeting early next month, I think collectively, it’s safe to say there is much more deep digging to be done. We currently have the lowest rates we’ve enjoyed in some time, and we want to guarantee this advantage for our quality of life for residential, industrial, commercial and public customers for the next generation. We will not rush the decision-making process. We want to get it right.”

Board President Dan Slusser released a statement following the session.

“The Utility Service Board considers this another major step in providing the city of Logansport and the LMU service area with reliable, affordable energy for the foreseeable future. USB truly appreciates the effort and input provided by the Logansport City Council, Mayor Kitchell and Lewis & Kappes regarding this important endeavor.”

Dynegy, Southern Power, Morgan Stanley, Duke, New Era Energy and the Indiana Municipal Power Agency all submitted proposals to LMU.

Kitchell said the scope of the work Lewis & Kappes performed is one component of the overall future planning necessary for LMU.

“I think we have to consider our potential to generate power to sell on the grid as well as what we have to do to diversify our energy portfolio to include renewable energy such as solar power,” Kitchell said. “Given declining tax revenue brought upon us by state law, we have to consider other revenue sources for our city.”

Lewis & Kappes is an Indianapolis law firm retained by LMU to review the proposals.
