Weekday Update for June 22, 2016

Last Updated on June 22, 2016 by cassnetwork

Here’s your weekday update from Cass County Communication Network for Wednesday, June 22, 2016. You can listen using the link above.

SEVERE WEATHER LIKELY

Severe weather is possible across much of Indiana this afternoon and continuing into the evening, and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security reminds Hoosiers to use caution and be prepared.

The National Weather Service has reported that the northern third of the state is at moderate risk for severe weather, north central Indiana along the I-74 corridor faces an enhanced risk and south central Indiana is at slight risk for severe weather. The greatest threats are damaging winds, large hail, heavy rain and tornadoes.

Cass County EMA director Alvin Beckman says the confidence level from forecasters is high, and encourages people not to plan outdoor activities and to monitor the weather.

It’s important to take precautions in advance of severe weather, in case immediate action is needed.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security encourages people to stay up-to-date on current weather conditions using a weather app, following a local TV or radio station, or visiting a reliable internet source such as www.weather.gov.

Consider turning up the volume on cell phone notifications. Be familiar with the notification settings of weather apps.

Keep electronic devices fully charged in case of a power outage.

Know where to take shelter in the event of severe weather. Residents living in manufactured housing should identify another location to take shelter.

Do not walk or drive through any flooded areas – it takes only six inches of fast-moving flood water to knock over an adult and only two feet to move a vehicle. If a road is closed, find another route.

We’ll be posting information as we receive it on our websites, on Facebook and Twitter and through CASSINFO mobile alerts. Information about signing up for CASSINFO mobile alerts is available here.
AMATEUR RADIO FIELD DAY SET FOR JUNE 25

Members of the Cass County Amateur Radio Club will gather to operate their “ham” radio stations for 24 consecutive hours beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday June 25.

The event will be held at the Cass County Emergency Management Agency building at 1227 North State Road 17, just north of Logansport.

The goal of field day is to introduce the public to the amateur radio hobby, allow local ham radio operators to practice their skills at making as many contacts as possible during the 24 hours of the event, and to have fun and fellowship. Amateur radio functions completely independent of the Internet or cell phone infrastructure.

When other communications systems fail or become over-loaded, amateur radio can still operate and get vital messages through during natural or man-made disasters.

Members of the Cass County Amateur Radio Club invite the public to attend the local Field Day event. A special amateur radio station will be available so members of the public of all ages can get a feel for the hobby, by getting on the air themselves with assistance from a licensed ham radio operator.

For more information about amateur radio, visit the Cass County Amateur Radio Club website at www.w9vmw.org or the American Radio Relay League website at www.arrl.org . You can also find the Cass County Amateur Radio Club on Facebook.
