COUNCIL TO CONSIDER ROAD PROJECTS
At their meeting on July 5, the Logansport City Council will consider a couple of items that could provide nearly $2.5 million in road improvements. At Monday night’s finance committee meeting, discussion centered around leveraging the nearly $1 million in LOIT special distribution funds the city received for transportation infrastructure maintenance as a match to apply for up to $1 million in grant funds from INDOT for paving projects within the city. The council also discussed appropriating funds to add lighting and rails to the 18th Street Bridge, and to move the sidewalk from the east side of the bridge to the west side, in conjunction with the county’s planned renovation of the bridge in 2018. Moving the sidewalk would connect with the trail extension and a planned future extension to Ivy Tech’s Logansport campus. If approved, the money for the nearly half-million dollar project would come from the CEDIT fund, which currently has a balance of about $2.6 million. The items will be considered at the council’s July meeting, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5, due to the Fourth of July holiday.
STATE REMINDS RESIDENTS OF FIREWORK LAWS, SAFETY
Each year, more firework-related injuries are reported on Independence Day than any other day. In 2015, 85 cases, or 47 percent of the total reported cases, occurred on Independence Day.
Last year, 181 firework-related injuries were reported to the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH), the highest number of firework-related injuries since 2006. According to media reports, two Indiana residents died in 2015 due to firework-related injuries.
More than one-third of all reported firework-related injuries involved individuals 18 years of age and younger.
The State Fire Marshal is reminding Hoosiers to be mindful of fireworks laws when celebrating this summer. Fireworks may only be set off on the user’s property, on the property of someone who has consented to the use of fireworks or at locally-mandated special discharge locations, though not all communities designate a special discharge location. The person setting off fireworks could be liable for damage on any property.
A person using fireworks anywhere other than the three previously listed places could face a maximum fine of $500 per infraction. Damaging someone else’s property with fireworks could result in a fine of $5,000 as well as one year imprisonment. Restitution costs to the property owner may also be assessed.
Throughout the year, fireworks may only be used between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. unless further limited by local ordinances, as in the Logansport city limits. June 29 – July 3 and July 5-9, fireworks may be used between 5 p.m. and two hours after sunset. On Independence Day they are permitted between 10 a.m. and midnight. Use at other times within the city limits is considered an infraction and subject to a $100 fine.
Someone recklessly, knowingly, or intentionally using fireworks and causing the serious injury or death of someone else could face imprisonment and a maximum fine of $10,000.
Anyone under the age of 18 possessing or using fireworks without the presence of an adult could face a fine of $500 per infraction.
TRINE UNIVERSITY HOSTS INFO SESSION
An open discussion and informational session on the master’s degrees offered at Trine University will be held this week on the Logansport campus.
