A former Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives is this week’s recipient of a special Logansport award.
Nelson Becker, who served for several years as the District 24 representative in the Indiana House, has been named the Bicentennial Citizen of the Week.
Becker, a Logansport attorney, never lost an election, stepping down after the 1984 general election to focus on his family and his practice.
“Nelson represented his generation of legislative peers well in that he didn’t seek out controversy, and he was able to find consensus,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said today. “Nelson was able to look out for the interests of people in Logansport, Cass and Carroll counties while at the same time leading the other 99 members of the House, the state budget and the governor’s agenda. They say House Speaker is a part-time job, but it’s probably the most important part-time job in Indiana. Nelson remains respected by those who served with him because of the way he served.”
Becker, a Republican, also practiced law with the late Fred Sabatini, who was a popular emcee for local events. The Becker family was active in many local causes, including the Cass County Family Y.
The award is presented throughout Indiana’s bicentennial year to recognize local natives or residents who have been recognized statewide or nationwide for their contributions.
Becker will receive an Indiana state flag and a certificate from Mayor Dave Kitchell.
