bicentennialThe man who may be the first African-American to win a state championship of any kind for Logansport is the latest recipient of a special Logansport honor.

Charles “Chuck” Wells was an individual state track champion in the shotput in 1975. He was a member of the Logansport High School Class of 1976 which iscelebrating its 40th class reunion this weekend.

“Chuck was probably better known for being a bruising All-North Central Conference fullback during his three years as a starter for then Coach Mark Surface,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said Friday. “Chuck was difficult for opposing players to tackle on the first try, and consequently Logansport was successful in attempting a two-point conversion after all of its touchdowns in a 1975 season when the Berries went 8-2 and were ranked among the elite schools of Indiana football.”

The Bicentennial Citizen of the Week is an award presented throughout Indiana’s bicentennial year to recognize local natives or residents who have been recognized statewide or nationwide.

Wells, who went on to play college football in Arizona, will receive an Indiana state flag and a certificate from Mayor Dave Kitchell.
