What was once a downtown hotel could find new life as a mixed-use housing development.

“It’s a little too early to give much more detail,” Pete Schwiegeraht, senior developer for Cincinnati-based Miller Valentine said by phone today, “but we’ll hopefully be able to bring a more formal development proposal to council likely in September or October.

He says the company has come to an agreement with the owner under which Miller Valentine would purchase the Logan Square building at the corner of 3rd and Broadway in downtown Logansport.

Schwiegeraht says Miller Valentine has more than a dozen developments in Indiana cities including Kokomo, Muncie, Huntington and Indianapolis.

“One of the most important things, why I hope we’re the right developer, is that we are a long term owner of our assets, so if we come into the community and make an investment, we intend to be a part of the community.”

“This is welcome news on many fronts,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said in a press release issued Thursday afternoon. “First, it fills a void in our downtown that has been there since Logan Square was closed. Second, it creates more downtown housing, and third, it supports our downtown economy.”

Kitchell says the five-story building was built by Logansport construction magnate James I. Barnes and served as the Captain Logan Hotel, and also the Logan Theater. After a sale in the 1980s, it was occupied by Consolidated Union insurance and the Chamber of Commerce.
