In light of expected severe weather beginning Saturday, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security is launching a smartphone reporting app that collects photos and text
Beginning Saturday through at least Monday, Southern Indiana is at risk for very heavy rainfall. A flash flood watch is in effect over Southwest Indiana as well as locations along and north of the Ohio River Saturday through Sunday evening.
“Technology is being used every day to help move more information faster,” said Indiana Governor Mike Pence. “This app allows citizens to share data in a quick, effective manner and provides the State with knowledge on a wide-range of situations. The primary goal is to help the citizens of Indiana in times of need.”
John Erickson, Director of Public Affairs for state homeland security, said, “The app is multi-faceted and can provide valuable information during emergencies, disasters and other situations. Information from the app will assist with situational awareness for the State of Indiana. All images and text will be provided directly to the state homeland security watch desk, which is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
The app is meant to assist citizens and public safety professionals to report all types of situations, including major auto accidents, hazardous chemical spills, suspicious activity, damage, flooding, and other forms of severe weather. The app provides a warning that if danger is imminent, call 9-1-1.
“This is not a substitute for emergency phone numbers,” Erickson said. “If you are in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.”
“Also, do not put yourself in harm’s way to gather photos or other information. Your safety must come first,” Erickson said.
The app can be downloaded for free on Apple and Android system smartphones. Search for the term “Indiana Homeland Security Report Hazards.” The icon for the app is predominantly red, and has a camera at a left-leaning angle.
Potential Severe Weather: Be Watchful and Flexible
IDHS warns citizens to be aware of potential heavy rainfall this weekend and into early next week. Check local weather reports often and stay apprised of changing conditions.
“Flexibility is key to these types of situations,” Erickson said. “Assess plans, especially if you have to travel or be outdoors. Cancel them if necessary for safety.”
Drive Around Flood Water
-Don’t drive through flood water.
-Obey signs closing roads.
-Obey local public safety officials.
-If possible, avoid driving in hard rain. Wait until the storm passes if possible.
