bicentennialLogansport’s first dual Indiana All-Star has been named a Bicentennial Citizen of the Week.

From 1973 to 1976, Mark Lozier won four letters in basketball and three in football. His career culminated when he was named the third Logansport graduate to play on the coveted Indiana All-Star Basketball Team. He also won three letters as a quarterback for the Berries football team. The Berries were 20-5 on the hardwood during his senior season, which represented one of the best seasons in LHS history. Four of Logansport’s losses were by a combined nine points, and all five losses were to conference rivals. The Berries were eliminated from the IHSAA Tournament by eventual state champion Marion.

The Indiana All-Stars that included Lozier swept Kentucky, defeating Darrell Griffith, the first high school player invited to the U.S. Olympic trials. Lozier led Logansport to an 8-2 record in football his senior season, and the Berries were in the state’s top 20. Their only losses were on the road to Lafayette Jeff and Richmond, and the two losses combined were by just six points.

“It’s one thing to be an all-star in one sport, but what Mark accomplished in two sports is rare,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said today. “It had to be difficult for him to decide which sport to play in college, but his decision to attend the University of Michigan and play for what was eventually a No. 1 team in basketball, proved to be a sound one.”

The Bicentennial Citizen of the Week is an award presented throughout Indiana’s bicentennial year to recognize local natives or residents who have been recognized statewide or nationwide.

Lozier, who has retired and is now living in the Chicago area, will receive an Indiana state flag and a certificate from the city.
