bicentennialA Logansport insurance agent who recently joined his wife and family in donating to a local park project and making it a reality has received a special award.

Dick Sims, an avid runner, has been a familiar face on local roads and trails for decades. Last Friday, he and his wife, Ann, joined their son Steve and daughter-in- law Heidi in donating $60,000 for the Interconnector Trail. It was dedicated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday morning at Huston Park. The trail connects Logansport’s newest park with the Hervey Nature Preserve east of Logansport Memorial Hospital, the River Bluff Trail, Cole Bridge, Riverside Park and Eel River Run.

Mayor Dave Kitchell said the Sims’ contribution is exemplary for Logansport and reflects the generous spirit Logansport has that many communities don’t.

“Dick has been known to literally bear a torch when Logansport has been on the course for torch runs through the state, but the figurative torch he has borne for us is for fitness and health. Because of Dick and his family, Logansport residents will be able to enjoy running and the beauty of some of the most attractive natural areas in the city and county.”

The mayor also credited the parks foundation along with current and former parks board members for making the trail a reality.

Sims and other recipients are being recognized throughout Indiana’s bicentennial year for their work statewide, nationwide or worldwide. He will receive an Indiana state flag and a certificate from Mayor Dave Kitchell.
