Governor Pence Requests Federal Low-Interest Disaster Loans for Howard County; 6 Additional Counties Would Benefit

As a result of recent severe storms beginning August 24, Governor Mike Pence has requested federal low-interest disaster loans for Howard County.

If declared, the contiguous counties of Cass, Carroll, Clinton, Tipton, Grant and Miami would also qualify for the loans. If granted, residents, businesses and certain non-profit organizations affected would be eligible to apply.

“August has been a difficult month for Indiana regarding severe weather,” said Governor Pence. “The storms that began August 24 hit many counties, and while they were more violent and caused more widespread devastation than earlier flooding, tornadoes tend to be insured, which means certain federal programs will not apply. With that taken into account, the State of Indiana is applying for low-interest disaster loans.”

Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight said, “The low-interest loans are a way for this community to take control of our own recovery. We unfortunately faced a similar situation in 2013, and from that trial, Kokomo has come back stronger and more vibrant than before. I’m confident we can do so again.”

Paul Wyman, President of the Howard County Commissioners, said, “While the damage to our county has been extensive, we can consider ourselves blessed that there were no deaths, and the injuries reported were minor. These loans will allow Howard County citizens to rebuild and heal.”

The U.S. Small Business Administration administers the federal low-interest disaster loans program.

Governor Pence has directed the Indiana Department of Homeland Security to continue to coordinate state actions in the aftermath of these storms.
