Logansport’s first Indiana Teacher of the Year has received another honor.
Jitka Nelson has been named a Logansport Bicentennial Citizen of the Week by Mayor Dave Kitchell.
“Jitka received a well-deserved honor from Superintendent Glenda Ritz earlier this fall, and it is the kind of honor that will allow her to be a tremendous ambassador for Logansport during her sabbatical as Indiana Teacher of the Year,” Kitchell said.
“Even though Jitka is from the Czech Republic, she made it clear when she accepted the Sagamore of the Wabash Award last week that Logansport is the place she considers home. Many people would have left Logansport years ago, but as Jitka said in her own words, she was grateful someone in Logansport gave her the chance to be a teacher, and that turned out to be an investment that has paid huge dividends not only for the corporation and LHS, but the hundreds of students she has had.”
The mayor said Nelson may be the first naturalized American to receive the Indiana Teacher of the Year Award, and her example is a fantastic one for other English language learners like her to follow.
“It underscores what generations before us have said many times – America is the land of opportunity,” he added.
The award is presented throughout Indiana’s bicentennial year to recognize local natives or residents who have been recognized statewide or nationwide for their contributions.
Jitka received an Indiana state flag at a ceremony last week at LHS and will receive a certificate from Mayor Kitchell.
