The City of Logansport has officially recognized an American holiday tradition that encourages volunteer efforts and contributions to charitable causes.

Mayor Dave Kitchell has proclaimed Tuesday, Nov. 29, as “Giving Tuesday” in Logansport. The day is observed in communities throughout the nation as a time for renewed commitment to volunteerism and charitable support.

“Traditionally, the Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive in Logansport represents an appeal to our community to support local families,” Kitchell said. “The observance of Giving Tuesday coincides with the opening week of the Christmas shopping season and the Red Kettle Drive visible at local stores. We’re asking shoppers to drop in some of the coins and dollars from their holiday purchases to anonymously address needs in our community.”

Kitchell said The Salvation Army and several other local resources are not tax-supported and rely on the contributions of generous citizens to sustain their mission.

“We often think of generous people as those who are wealthy, but in fact, it’s been shown that donations predominantly are primarily from average, typical Americans. Many of them live paycheck to paycheck, but they know that they are one paycheck away in many cases from needing the services that are provided from agencies such as The Salvation Army.”

The mayor said the support for The Salvation Army locally has been needed more in the past few years with the loss of agencies such as Love Inc. and Helpline.
