Mayor declares “Cubs Weekend” in Logansport

Last Updated on November 4, 2016 by cassnetwork

At 1:08 p.m. today, the city of Logansport officially started an observance it has never had before.

Mayor Dave Kitchell today declared today the start of Chicago Cubs World Series Celebration Weekend in the city. The unusual start time for the weekend coincides with the 108-year drought in world championships for Chicago’s National League club, and the Cubs’ World Series Parade in Chicago.

“We have many reasons to celebrate this achievement,” Kitchell said. “In recent years, Logansport’s Aaron Heilman pitched for the Cubs. In past years, another Logansport native, Johnny “Red” Corriden, played for the Cubs. And of course, the first commissioner of baseball, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, was from Logansport.”

Generations of Cub fans have come to know the Cubs. Among former players and coaches to visit Logansport have been Joe Pepitone, a flamboyant first baseman, and Jim Riggleman, a former manager who guided the Cubs to the playoffs. Riggleman was a minor league teammate of Logansport’s Mike Dimmel, who was drafted by the Dodgers and played for the Baltimore Orioles.

“We want our Cub fans in Logansport to celebrate here the way Cubs fans in Chicago are celebrating,” Kitchell said. “There’s reason to celebrate an historic moment, but there’s no reason to be destructive. This is a moment in our lifetimes we should forever remember.”
