Last Updated on November 19, 2016 by cassnetwork

karen-shidlerCass County native and registered nurse, Karen Shidler has joined the North Central Indiana Area Health Education Center’s staff as Clinical Education Coordinator. For many years Shidler was the Diabetes Education Coordinator at Logansport Memorial Hospital. She comes to AHEC with thirty years of experience in the fields of nursing and diabetes education.

Shidler will work closely with the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Family Medicine to coordinate the placement of students into medically underserved communities. AHEC serves an eleven county district in North Central Indiana. Shidler will also partner with more regional clinical training programs found at Indiana University Kokomo, Ivy Tech Community College, and Purdue University with the same goals in mind.

The AHEC methodology is founded in a “grow our own approach.” In addition to its many clinical training programs, AHEC works to increase awareness of potential healthcare careers among disadvantaged K-12 students. The hope is students will train in and then decide to stay and practice in those communities.

Continuing education for healthcare professionals is also available through the AHEC program. Those program offers will grow with the addition of Shidler to the AHEC staff. In addition to expanding the number of clinical training sites in the area, Shidler will also develop diabetes education programs for existing healthcare providers and community members.
