Williams named Logansport ‘Bicentennial Citizen’

A former member of the Indiana All-Star basketball team has been recognized with a special city honor.

Jeff Williams, a 1977 graduate of Logansport High School, went on to start for the Indiana All-Stars in their two-game series with Kentucky. Williams, who started for the Berries for two years, once held the single-game mark for a Logansport player in the Berry Bowl with 43 points in 1976. That came before high school athletic organizations adopted the three-point shot.

Williams later played collegiately at Ball State. He has been an assistant coach for another North Central Conference member school, Richmond, for several years. He is the son of former Logansport Coach Jim Williams.

“In Jeff, we have half of a rare tandem in Indiana athletics,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said today. “Jeff and the other Logansport guard in 1975-76, Mark Lozier, both went on to become Indiana All-Stars.”

The mayor said many local residents forget that Williams also was an outstanding shortstop on the 1977 baseball team that won the state championship, but had to give up participation in the tournament because he was named to the All-Star team.

Williams will receive an Indiana state flag and a certificate from the Mayor’s Office. He and other current or former residents have been recognized throughout Indiana’s bicentennial year because they have received statewide, nationwide or worldwide recognition.
