An Indiana University expert on broadband access throughout the state will be on hand for a special public meeting next month.

Drew Klacik of the Indiana University Public Policy Institute will be the lead speaker at a public meeting on Internet access issues. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the council chambers on the third floor of the City Building.

Klacik was the co-author of a study examining the next 25 years of Indiana’s future that include factors both spurring and working against its growth. Klacik grew up in Northwest Indiana and graduated from Purdue University.

Logansport Mayor Dave Kitchell says the meeting is the first step his administration is taking to work with county officials and community leaders to address high-speed Internet access not only in the city, but rural areas in Cass County.

“With new administrations in Indianapolis and Washington, much of their initial agendas has involved infrastructure and how important it is to our collective future,” Kitchell said. “Technology infrastructure is part of that discussion, and there are a number of initiatives designed to further Internet access not only for residential and school use, but for business and industry. It is becoming as essential for the 21st century generations as electricity was to the 20th century. Our challenge is to provide the same kind of extension of service.”

The meeting is free.
