Traveling exhibit honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

INDIANAPOLIS – Three students were honored with scholarship awards as part of Ivy Tech Community College’s Inaugural Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Project.

The Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Legacy Project is an ARTIvism exhibition that honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. All Ivy Tech students were invited to participate in the exhibit by submitting artwork created to honor the legacy left behind. ARTIvism combines “art” and “activism” and is created to increase social, environmental and technical awareness of communities through the medium of art.

All submissions were juried and scholarships were awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place Best in Show. The three students who won created art with the theme of “Moving Forward,” in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Those students are as follows:

  • First: Emerald Green, Southwest Region
  • Second: Cheryl Collins, Kokomo Region
  • Third: Katie Wheeler, Jazz Miller, Jerika Thomas and Noah Brown, Southern Indiana Region

The MLK Jr. Legacy Project, which features the winners plus other submissions, will tour to Ivy Tech campuses across the state for an eight week period beginning on January 17, 2017. The schedule is as follows:

  • January 17-19: Central Indiana
  • January 23-19: Columbus
  • January 30-Febraury 2: Northwest
  • February 6February 9: North Central
  • February 13February 16: Northeast
  • February 20February 23: Lafayette
  • February 27March 2: Kokomo
  • March 6March 9: East Central

Ivy Tech Community College is proud to display works of art created by its students across the state. All exhibits are open to the public and can be viewed, free of charge.
