Hess named “Citizen of the Week”

A familiar voice in broadcasting who has been honored by the Indiana High School Athletic Association for his work is the recipient of a special city honor.

Milton “Milt” Hess, who was the voice of the Logansport Berries for many years at WSAL and WLHM before moving to WHZR where he was recognized by the IHSAA, also has anchored morning sports reports on local stations.

Mayor Dave Kitchell proclaimed him as the Citizen of the Week for his work in supporting high school athletics.

“It’s appropriate that we recognize Milt at this time of the year when people appreciate what radio sportscasters do in Indiana,” Kitchell said. “It’s because of people like Milt that millions have enjoyed Hoosier Hysteria. Not everyone can be at the game, but whenever there’s a major high school basketball game in the state, there’s at least one broadcaster calling it somewhere.”

While high school basketball has changed, the tradition of high school basketball coverage was even included in the movie “Hoosiers” with long-time Fort Wayne and Indiana University announcer Hilliard Gates depicting the part of play-by-play man.

Hess, a 1976 Logansport High School graduate, received his bachelor’s degree in communications from Purdue in 1980. He will receive a gift certificate for dinner for two at The Fireside Restaurant. He and his wife, Chris, the principal at Fairview Elementary School, are the parents of a son, Tanner, and a daughter, Hayley.

The Citizen of the Week Award is presented on an ongoing basis to recognize local residents and natives for their work or volunteerism.
