INDIANAPOLIS – Thirty-eight students from Ivy Tech Community College were named to this year’s All-Indiana Community College Academic Team at an event on March 17. The event was held at Shreve Hall in the Corrine and Steve Ferguson Academic Building at the Ivy Tech Bloomington Campus. The academic competition scores students on academic honors, activities including leadership and work experience, and an essay.

Phi Theta Kappa developed the All-USA Community College Academic Team to recognize high achieving two-year college students who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that extends their education beyond the classroom to benefit society. Scholarship recipients were also announced at the event, which featured keynote speaker Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner, president and CEO of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.

Trisha Norfleet, Ivy Tech Kokomo student, received a $5,000 scholarship from Follett Higher Education Learning Group and will be introduced at the American Association of Community College (AACC) Convention in New Orleans in April. Follett awards only twenty of these scholarships total to students nationwide. The All-USA program is widely recognized as the most prestigious academic honor for students attending community college, with colleges being allowed to nominate two students for showing intellectual rigor and demonstrating academic achievement, leadership and civic growth. Norfleet was also recognized as a New Century Scholar, receiving an additional $2,000 for being recognized as one of the highest scoring students in each state. Judges consider academic accomplishments, leadership, activities and how students extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom when scoring students.

Mikaela Dee, Ivy Tech Central Indiana student and Matthew Nelson, Ivy Tech Kokomo-Logansport student, have both been awarded $1,250 scholarships and have been named 2017 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Silver Scholars. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver and 50 Bronze Scholars, and providing nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Both Dee and Nelson were recognized as Silver Scholars. “The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” said J. Mark Davis, president of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. “We are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa and make it possible for deserving students to achieve their educational goals.”
