STATEHOUSE – Local lawmakers this week at the Statehouse laced up their sneakers with their suits to help raise cancer awareness.

“Every year, we participate in the Suits and Sneakers challenge to stand up to cancer,” State Rep. Bill Friend (R-Macy) said. “We want to raise awareness, increase research and promote a healthy lifestyle to fight against this terrible disease.”

The Suits and Sneakers challenge is an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches to help raise cancer awareness and support those affected by the disease.

“The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be more than 36,000 new cancer cases in Indiana this year, which is 15th in the nation,” State Rep. Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo) said. “We are doing our part in the battle against this disease to show our support for patients and survivors, and promote preventative measures and treatment that can hopefully save lives.”

Participating in Suits and Sneakers is a Statehouse tradition that members look forward to every year. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the U.S. – exceeded only by heart disease, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Many Hoosiers have seen firsthand the effect cancer can have on individuals, their families and loved ones,” State Rep. Tony Cook (R-Cicero) said. “We are doing what we can to support them and manage the disease through research and medical support so everyone can live longer, better lives.”

The event is an opportunity to remind people about all the ways they can reduce their risk of cancer; like eating right, exercising, making healthy lifestyle choices and following the American Cancer Society’s recommended cancer screening guidelines.

“Suits and Sneakers is something we all look forward to every year because it’s a great way to show support for cancer research and awareness,” said Heath VanNatter (R-Kokomo). “Nearly everyone knows someone who has been impacted by the disease and this day serves as a reminder to do all we can to support cancer patients, spread the word about prevention and work toward a cure.”
