Veteran Myers named ‘Citizen of the Week’

A man who was born in a log cabin near New Waverly and survived months as a prisoner of war during World War II is the latest recipient of the Logansport Citizen of the Week Award.

Jim Myers, 94, a resident of Woodbridge Health Campus, was shot down over Germany on his 31st and final mission in the Army Air Force after flying two missions on D-Day. Six bullets punctured his parachute, before he was imprisoned by the Germans. He later was marched west across Europe to enemy lines where American military police rescued him.

“Jim typifies the bravery of America’s greatest generation – a generation that is becoming more fleeting every day,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said. “His contributions to the war effort came at a critical time and he is a living testament to those who paid dearly for representing freedom abroad. Our hats go off to him, and our hearts go out to him.”

One of Myers’ friends, Bill Ellington, visits with Myers frequently and recalls that he was a survivor of the Black Forest Death March. Myers was a flight engineer on a B-24.

After the war, he returned to Logansport and was married for 65 years.

“He as a smart guy, or he wouldn’t have survived,” Ellington says of his decorated friend, who also has been recognized as an honorary Cass County deputy sheriff.

The Citizen of the Week Award is presented on an ongoing basis to recognize local residents and natives for their work or volunteerism. He will receive a certificate from the Mayor’s Office and a gift certificate to a local restaurant.
