KOKOMO, Ind. — Indiana University Kokomo offers a new, flexible option for people seeking careers in the fast-growing fields of health care and informatics, with new online degrees available starting this fall semester.
Students will be able to earn a Bachelor of Science in Applied Health Science or Bachelor of Science in Informatics completely online, with programs created by six IU campuses, including Kokomo.
“We understand that a lot of students don’t have the flexibility in their schedules to come to campus for traditional face-to-face classes,” said Christian Chauret, dean of the School of Sciences. “The informatics program provides the opportunity to earn a high-quality IU degree wherever they are, to tap into a growing career field.”
The applied health sciences degree is for students who want to work in health care as community and public health care educators, or to prepare for graduate school to enter the field of health care management.
“The applied health sciences degree is for people who want to have a career in a health field that is not clinically related,” said John Hughey,chair of the division of allied health sciences. “It can open the door to a number of community and public health positions, working for state and local health departments and other health-related public and private organizations.”
Following IU Online’s innovative approach, the two new degrees enable students to be admitted to one IU campus, but learn from faculty and network with students throughout the IU system. IU Kokomo faculty will be among those teaching the online classes.
The informatics degree is designed for working students, including those with prior credits or an associate degree. Informatics students study the intersection of people and technology, and focus on solving problems through the implementation of computing tools. The 120-credit hour program can lead to careers in web development, supply chain management, medical records, system analysis, biotechnology, and public relations.
IU Kokomo faculty will collaborate with colleagues from IU East, IU Northwest, IU South Bend, IU Southeast, and IUPUI to deliver this degree.
The applied health sciences degree is targeted at Indiana health workers with prior college credits or associate degrees, and offers courses in health care delivery and leadership, health communication, policy, and ethics. It includes tracks in community health education and health administration. The 120-credit hour program enhances potential in career advancement in entry and mid-level positions in health-related organizations.
