Logansport, Eel Township and Fulton County will share $600,000 in funding used to clean up dilapidated sites for redevelopment.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced today that a joint application led by Logansport was awarded the largest Brownfield grant of six awarded in Indiana, including one for Indianapolis. The grants are awarded to remediate environmentally contaminated sites. Nationwide, only 172 were awarded.

“We’re fortunate to be receiving this funding made possible by the efforts of Deputy Mayor Mercedes Brugh,” Logansport Mayor Dave Kitchell said. “Through her efforts in coordinating this application with Eel Township and Fulton County, we’ll return much-needed federal investment in our communities. This should go a long way in leveraging public and private money in some of the oldest areas in our community and support our neighborhoods and property values.”

According to the EPA, a previous grant for Logansport, Fulton and Cass Counties led to more than two dozen environmental investigations, created more than 100 jobs and leveraged nearly $30 million in new investment.

Kitchell acknowledged the contributions of Brugh follow the $1 million Community Crossings grant she garnered for the city last year. He said Logansport’s record in dealing with contaminated sites dates back nearly 30 years ago when the former Midwest Plating plant at 12th and Spear streets was remediated after it closed.

“This kind of redevelopment is smart because the infrastructure surrounding these sites is already there,” Kitchell said. “This funding allows us to repurpose what are in some cases neglected properties.”
