Peconga named ‘Citizen of the Week’

A Logansport man who has been instrumental in bringing thousands of visitors to Logansport and supporting girls athletics is this week’s recipient of a special city honor.

Bob Peconga has been an active tournament organizer for several years. Mayor Dave Kitchell said last weekend’s inaugural Sue Jones Invitational Softball Tournament at AIM High Park was made possible because of Peconga’s efforts.

“This was something Bob wanted to do for the community because Logansport has long had a history of promoting both girls and women’s softball,” Kitchell said. “He mentioned the idea to me in 2015, and I knew then he would put together a great tournament with the city’s blessing.”

That day came Saturday when legendary Logansport girls coach and Hall of Fame softball pitcher Sue Jones returned to Logansport to be part of the festivities. Fifteen teams competed in the two-day tournament, which attracted players from Illinois and Michigan in addition to teams from Indiana.

“The impact of this tournament, along with the baseball tournament at Fairview Park, introduced many consumers to Logansport for the first time, but it also invested thousands in our local economy,” Kitchell said. “When volunteer efforts create that kind of opportunity for our city, it should be acknowledged for what it does for all of us.”

The Citizen of the Week recognizes Logansport natives or residents who contribute to the community or are recognized for their achievements. Recipients received a certificate of appreciation from the city and a $20 gift certificate.
