Citizen of the Week goes to Killion

A volunteer who plays a pivotal role in efforts to teach adults how to read in Logansport is this week’s recipient of a special city honor.

Carolyn Killion, literacy coordinator for Cass County Literacy Volunteers, has been named Citizen of the Week by Mayor Dave Kitchell. In her capacity, Killion regularly meets with adults who want to learn to read and finds a match with adult tutors.

“Most people don’t know or can appreciate the work that Carolyn does, but it’s invaluable to those people in our community who may not know where to go or who to contact to find the help they need,” Kitchell said. “What Carolyn is doing is in part work force development, but it also helps many adults learn English so they can become American citizens.”

Killion taught English and Latin for 37 years in Logansport schools. While at Logansport High School, she was one of the coaches for the Academic Super Bowl team. Three of her squads won state championships.

A Logansport native, she is a 1962 LHS graduate. She received her teaching degree from Indiana State. She is the mother of three children, Amy, Knoxville, Tenn.; Tony, a son employed with the Department of Homeland Security in Virginia; and Heather, the 1987 LHS valedictorian who is a pharmacist in Columbia, Md.

The Citizen of the Week honors Logansport native, current or former residents for their contributions. Recipients receive a certificate from the Mayor’s Office and a $20 gift certificate to a local restaurant.
