Mayor says changes coming to Heartland signage

A heavy traffic and sometimes dangerous area at the southwest edge of Logansport is in for some changes that may improve reaction time and make it less confusing for motorists.

Mayor Dave Kitchell said today that a discussion with Indiana Department of Transportation’s LaPorte District officials has led to some agreement on what should be affordable changes. One involves moving a cluster of signs at the intersection of Ind. 29 and the U.S. 35 Bypass further south on Ind. 29 to add reaction time for northbound traffic. The signs are currently located at the intersection, which has a flashing yellow light for north/south traffic.

INDOT also has agreed to add a sign on the west leg of the U.S. 35 Bypass to indicate to Indianapolis-bound motorists what exit they need to take. Currently, there is no signage indicating which route to take to get to Indianapolis.

“These are a couple of the things INDOT can do for very little cost that can only make this area safer,” Kitchell said. “There are more things that can be added such as strobe lights on the Burlington Avenue stoplights to caution motorists, particularly on foggy mornings when gray or white semi-trailers are camouflaged by fog in low areas.”

Further changes may be forthcoming from a report by Richard Cannon, the consultant from the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety retained by the city.
