I would like to announce my candidacy for Sheriff of Cass County. I am Gary Armstrong, and have 30 years of experience in the Law Enforcement field. I started my career with the Cass County Sheriff’s Department in 1987 working as a Jail Officer and Dispatcher. In December of 1988, I became a sworn officer with the Delphi Police Department. During my time there, I worked as a Patrolman until being promoted to Sergeant and ultimately was appointed Chief of Police in 1997.

In 2001, I decided to return home to Cass County and was hired as a Deputy Sheriff.

I have served the citizens of Cass County for the last 16 ½ years. During this time I was promoted to Sergeant to supervise second shift; a position I have held for five years. Overall, I have nine years of experience in a supervisory capacity. I also have experience working with budgets and know the value of the taxpayer’s money. I will work hard to ensure a responsible budget is prepared and stay within those guidelines.

I am a 1984 graduate of Pioneer High School and a 1989 graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. Over the course of my career I have attended numerous schools and training, further developing my expertise as an officer. I will be a leader who is proactive and progressive. I am a firm believer in leading by example.

I have been married for nearly 30 years to Chris (Wildermuth) Armstrong. She is the Executive Director of a local non-profit organization. We have two children. Our son Brock is a recent graduate of Manchester University. He has enlisted in the Air Force and leaves soon for basic training. Our daughter Karli is a senior at Purdue University. Both are Logansport High School graduates where they were active in many sports and clubs.

For many years, I have volunteered to help local organizations in the community. Some of those include United Way of Cass County, Logan’s Landing, Cass County Republicans and Big Brothers Big Sisters. I am also a big supporter of the American Red Cross Blood Donations, having donated over five gallons.

As Sheriff, I would like to re-build our reserve program. At one time this program was a hiring pool for full-time deputies. Several current deputies are former reserves. Another issue we face is overcrowding in our jail. I will work diligently with the Courts, Prosecutor, and Community Corrections to resolve this issue.
Having worked a second job most of my life, I am not afraid of hard work. If elected, I will be a hands on working Sheriff who will patrol and answer calls. I will strive to provide a safe community for Cass County residents to live and work in!
