A music teacher who has spent nearly 40 years teaching publicly and privately is this week’s recipient of a special city honor.
Carolyn Cassidy, who has played flute for both the Kokomo and Lafayette symphony orchestras, is this week’s Logansport Citizen of the Week.
“I really love working with kids,” she said Monday when learning of the honor.
Mayor Dave Kitchell said students and parents apparently love Cassidy enough to travel to Logansport for private lessons. She currently has 42 students from Logansport, Carroll, Lewis Cass and Pioneer in the Logansport area, as well as Faith Christian in Lafayette. She finds time to play in the Kokomo Park Band. She also has been a long-time accompanist at Calvary Presbyterian Church and played in Logansport Civic Players pit orchestras.
“We’re fortunate to have someone with her background who excels in music, and is passing that torch to dozens of students every year,” Kitchell said.
A native of Galveston, Texas, Carolyn and her family moved to a farm near Osage, Iowa, when she was three. She went on to earn her B.A. in music education from St. Olaf College in Minnesota. She then received her master’s degree in piano performance from Boston University where she met her husband, Dick. The couple lived in Cleveland, Ohio for one year before moving to Logansport in 1970. They had two sons, Michael and Brendon. Carolyn is the grandmother of two.
She is a member of the Cass County League of Women Voters, Delta Kappa Gamma teaching honorary, Rotary and Tri Kappa Sorority as well as the state and national music educator organizations and the National Federation of Music Clubs.
The Citizen of the Week recognizes Logansport natives or residents who contribute to the community or are recognized for their achievements. Recipients received a certificate of appreciation from the city and a $20 gift certificate.
