DACA recipients encouraged to work with authorized immigration legal service providers

Last Updated on September 5, 2017 by cassnetwork

The Trump Administration announced today that it is rescinding the previous Administration’s memorandum creating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

In a news release posted today, the White House says “DHS’s enforcement priorities remain in place. However, absent a law enforcement interest – which is largely the standard that has been in place since the inception of the program – the Department will generally not take actions to remove active DACA recipients.”

According to the White House, under changes announced today, current DACA recipients generally will not be impacted until after March 5, 2018, which gives Congress the opportunity to consider appropriate legislative solutions.

“If you have employment authorization documents from DACA and a driver’s license, they are still good until their expiration date,” said Zach Szmara, with Immigrant Connection at The Bridge Community Church in Logansport. “And, if your documents will expire in the next 6 months, specifically before March 5, then you can renew them for another 2 years.”

Renewal applications must be submitted by Oct. 5, 2017.

Szmara says it’s important to only use an authorized immigration legal services provider.
