Hutcheson named Citizen of the Week

A Logansport woman who took on a huge task for a volunteer is recognized this week for her work on behalf of the city.

B.J. Hutcheson was the first chairman of the Iron Horse Festival when it was held in 1981. The festival, which ran for 20 years, attracted thousands of people to the city and raised money for many nonprofit organizations supporting it.

“B.J. was a brave soul to take this on back then,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said today in naming her the Logansport Citizen of the Week. “In subsequent festivals, couples co-chaired the event because it became a monumental undertaking to plan, fund and execute annually. Had B.J. not done such a successful job in chairing the first festival, much of the success that happened in the years that followed would probably never have happened. She was a role model not only for other Iron Horse chairmen, but for chairs of other events.”

Hutcheson and her late husband, Ken, also were actively involved in the Heritage Preservation Gala, an event that not only raised thousands for the Cass County Memorial Center, but for other causes, including the Logansport Art Association and the Cass County Historical Society.

Hutcheson will receive a certificate from the Mayor’s Office and a $20 gift certificate to a local restaurant. The Citizen of the Week program acknowledges the contributions of local natives and current and former residents.
