Logansport awarded $547,000 for streets

For the second year in succession, the City of Logansport will be able to plan more than $1 million in street paving and repairs for the coming year.

Logansport has been awarded $547,000 from the Community Crossings program offered by the Indiana Department of Transportation. Earlier this year, the city council committed up to $1 million in matching funding in a grant application for the program. Last year, the state awarded the maximum $1 million amount to Logansport.

“We’re again fortunate to receive this funding,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said late this afternoon following Gov. Eric Holcomb’s announcement of the funding awards statewide. “This was made possible through the efforts of the city council, Deputy Mayor Mercedes Brugh, Street Department Commissioner Tony Shanks and Jodi Coblentz, our contracted city engineer.”

The mayor said the paving money the city has received in the past year has had an impact evident in every area of the city, particularly on the most heavily-traveled streets.

Logansport and other cities will receive additional funding in Local Road and Street and Motor Vehicle Highway funds thanks to additional funds made available by the Indiana General Assembly through the state gas tax increase.

“This is a significant investment in our infrastructure, and it also has an impact in employing and purchasing in our local economy that continues to be a plus economically,” Kitchell said. “This is what can happen when state and local government work together on what has been a serious problem.”
