Manufacturer adds 70 jobs, invests $50 million

A long-time manufacturer on the Hoosier Heartland in Logansport has announced a significant expansion.

Cal-Comp USA, a subsidiary of a company based in Thailand, will add 70 jobs to its existing work force. Additionally, the company will invest $50 million into the plant. The move comes as part of a shift in production of event recorders from Asia to North America.

In a report in today’s Inside Indiana Business, Cal-Comp USA North America Chief Operating Officer Ron Rehberger said the move will reduce costs by eliminating overseas transport and tariffs. The investment also will mean Logansport employees will be paid above the market average.

Logansport Mayor Dave Kitchell said the announcement is welcome news for a community that lost J.C. Penney and both of its Marsh stores this summer.

“This means a great deal not only to people who have been looking for decent, good-paying jobs, but to our tax base and our efforts to develop the area along the Hoosier Heartland Corridor,” the mayor said. “In the coming years, this area has great potential, and the decision announced today by Cal-Comp shows its stamp of approval on our local plant and its workforce and our efforts moving forward in developing the Heartland for industrial expansion.”

Kitchell said both he and Cass-Logansport Economic Development Director Bill Cuppy have been in a dialogue with Cal-Comp for several months. The mayor said the $50 million investment may be the largest single economic development project in Logansport since the Tyson Foods, formerly IBP, purchased Wilson Foods in the 1990s.

Cal-Comp was formerly owned by Spetagraphics before it was acquired in 2010. The company was originally founded in Logansport in the 1980s as Controls.
