Bunker Hill, IN – Offenders residing in the P.L.U.S. (Purposeful Living Units Serve) housing unit at Miami Correctional Facility (MCF) have been hard at work with the construction of their very own parade float which was featured in a recent Logansport parade. Offenders residing in this particular unit participate in community impact, commonly known as community service. These are activities that do not directly benefit the individual and have a positive impact on the housing unit, facility, and/or outside community.  A total of six (6) P.L.U.S. program participants took on the task of working from a blueprint to the creation of a parade float.

The Logansport Niddee Shrine Guild partnered with Miami Correctional Facility for this community service project. This year’s float theme revolved around Legos and “Building a Child’s Education.” The P.L.U.S. program participants spent approximately twenty-nine (29) hours on the parade float project and turned into quite the success. The parade float debuted in the Logansport Parade on August 23, 2017 and placed 4th in the parade float competition.

“The whole team of the arts and crafts enjoyed working on the float and we hope to be able to give back to the community again in the future,” stated P.L.U.S. program graduate, clerk, and mentor, Offender Michael Joiner. MCF Warden Kathy Griffin stated, “Community service projects are significant to both the P.L.U.S. program and to the community. These P.L.U.S. program participants demonstrated meaningful work and are encouraged to continue working towards their successful re-entry.”
