State Road 16 Chip Seal Preservation Sept. 19-22 in Cass/Miami Counties

Last Updated on October 3, 2017 by cassnetwork

State Road 16 will be closed between U.S. 31 and State Road 25 near Twelve Mile, beginning Tuesday, September 19 and running through Friday, September 22.

Crews will perform a chip seal and fog seal operation to preserve the road surface. Please note: this project is dependent on dry weather and may be delayed if conditions aren’t ideal.

State road detours must be along state-maintained roadways only. Drivers traveling west on State Road 16 will be detoured north on U.S. 31, south on State Road 25 and back to State Road 16. Drivers traveling east on State Road 16 will be detoured north on State Road 25, south on U.S. 31 and back to State Road 16.

Chip Seal Explained-
The chip seal process consists of distributing a liquid asphalt emulsion on the roadway and covering the liquid asphalt with crushed stone to provide a new wearing surface. Once the asphalt has cured, any excess chips left on the roadway are swept from the surface.

Chip sealing extends the life of a roadway by protecting it from moisture, ultraviolet degradation, and other damaging exposures. In addition to sealing the pavement, chip seal applications reestablish surface friction – improving safety for the motoring public. Of the pavement preservation methods employed by the state, chip sealing is perhaps the most cost effective. Studies show that every $1 invested in chip seal operations saves $6 to $14 in future roadway costs.
