The Indiana Department of Transportation’s LaPorte District is developing plans for two proposed intersection improvement projects on U.S. 24 in Logansport, Cass County.  The proposed intersection improvements are median U-Turns, also known as J-Turns http://www.in.gov/indot/3660.htm.

J-Turn intersections enhance safety by preventing direct crossing and left-turn movements.

INDOT will host public hearings on Monday, October 30 and Thursday, November 2 beginning at 6:00 p.m. (local time) at Logansport High School, 1 Berry Lane, Logansport, IN 46947

U.S. 24 at Logansport Road hearing – 10/30

U.S. 24 at C.R. 600 East hearing – 11/2

U.S. 24 at Logansport Road & C.R. 600 East
Each project proposes to modify the existing intersection from a county road yield crossing at a divided highway to a J-Turn intersection.  This type of intersection will prevent  traffic from crossing all four lanes of U.S. 24 in a single movement.  The project proposes to install new J-Turns in the median areas along U.S. 24 to the east and west of Logansport Road and C.R. 600 East.  As proposed, traffic on Logansport Road and C.R. 600 East will turn right when proceeding onto U.S. 24, making a legal U-turn in the median, then proceeding back onto U.S. 24 in the opposite direction to access Logansport Road and/or C.R. 600 East on the other side of U.S. 24.

U.S. 24 Intersection Improvement Projects

Each project proposes the installation of additional acceleration and deceleration lanes with J-Turn crossings in the median.  All proposed work would occur within INDOT owned right-of-way.  The maintenance of traffic plan includes shifting lane closures to allow construction activity to occur on one side of the roadway at a time.  Additional information will be presented as part of each public hearing presentation including project purpose and need, alternatives screening, traffic analysis, maintenance of traffic and project schedule.
