Carl Douglass Saunders, 92, Novi, Michigan, formerly of Logansport, passed away Monday, Nov.20, 2017 in the Suncrest Hospice in Novi, Michigan.
Born December 27, 1924, in Grass Creek, he was the son of the late Charles and Eva (Douglass) Saunders.
On April 17, 1948, in Logansport, he was married to Dortha (Rynearson) Saunders. She preceded him in death Oct. 25, 2010.
Carl was a 1945 graduate of Logansport High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. While stationed in the South Pacific, at the tender age of 18, Carl’s plane crashed into the ocean. He and the other survivors spent nearly two weeks adrift in the ocean before being washed ashore on an island held by Japan. They were rescued by the native people who took the survivors to a missionary, who in turn, took them to a coast watcher who reported their whereabouts and well-being.
Following the war, he returned to Logansport where he worked
as a motorcycle patrolman with the Logansport Police Department. He then enjoyed a long career with the Ohio Casualty Insurance Company where he worked as a claims representative. After retiring, he filled a special niche at Walmart where he assembled bicycles for the next 17 years, finally retiring for good in 2006.
Carl was a member of the Baptist Temple. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Lodge No. 66.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Scott Goings of Commerce Township, MI; one son, Gary Saunders of Pahrump, NV;
and one grandson, Alex Goings, of Commerce Township, MI.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Cloyde and Phillip Saunders and one granddaughter, Jillian Goings.
A funeral services celebrating Carl’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22 in Fisher Funeral Chapel with Pastor James Franklin officiating. The Cass County Honor Guard will present military honors at the funeral chapel.
Burial, at a later date, will take place in the Mount Hope Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, in the funeral chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.
