The Cass County Community Foundation hosted a Food Summit Wednesday, Dec. 20 for local food pantries and food banks to gather information and collaborate on ways to be more effective. Representatives from six organizations attended and shared current practices, hours of operation and available resources.
CCCF President Deanna Crispen and Zach Szmara, pastor at The Bridge led the discussion. Crispen explained, “Throughout the last several years CCCF has supported feeding the hungry through grants to organizations like Emmaus, the Salvation Army and others. This summer, our grants committee had several proposals focusing on food and food pantries and many questions about how our community as a whole was addressing food access. The Board of Directors decided to convene the providers to gather more information on what services and resources are currently available and to determine if there are gaps. Organizations that participated also received a $250 mini-grant to purchase additional food.”
Szmara shared, “This meeting is a start of a conversation and as a first step, we are providing local churches with the list of organizations, services available, hours of operation, and contact information. We hope by sharing this information we can all better serve those in the community who are in need of food.”
As the discussion concluded all agreed there are several items the pantries are always in need of: meats, eggs, toiletries, soap, laundry detergent and toilet paper. Donations of these items will be greatly appreciated and can be made to any of the organizations listed.
