Entrepreneur seeks lease for Memorial Center

A Noblesville businessman is interested in financially supporting city and county efforts to restore the Memorial Center for public use some time next year.

Rocky Shanehsaz, who operates a wedding and event center and has been an entrepreneur for several years in Hamilton County, says the historic center at 700 East Market Street has “great potential” as an attraction not just for downtown, but for the city.

Shanehsaz made his remarks Friday morning during an appearance before the Cass County Council, which met for the final time this year.

Logansport Mayor Dave Kitchell said he has met with Shanehsaz and his attorney earlier this week to discuss a memorandum of understanding on lease negotiations for the use of the entire building. One room in the building may be dedicated as an office for the Indiana Transportation Museum which announced in July it would have a Logansport presence and some of its operations here. The museum is currently operating train excursions in Cass and Howard counties. Shanehsaz had catered previous events in tandem with the museum.

Kitchell said any agreement would have to be approved by the center board and city and county officials, but would have to retain the historic character of the building for use as a bridal and wedding venue and event center. Shanehsaz’ hope is to convert the basement area to a commercial kitchen area and use the existing kitchen for a bar and staging area for serving.
