Kroeger named Logansport Citizen of the Year

A local businessman who has spent countless hours of community service in Logansport has been named the 2017 Logansport Citizen of the Year.

Paul Kroeger has served on the Cass County Community Foundation Board president and been active in several local organizations. He has co-hosted the Chamber of Commerce weekly radio show following the death of the late Fred Kelley more than 20 years ago. Earlier this year, he was named Chamber Businessman of the Year.

The designation is part of the city’s weekly “Citizen of the Week” program recognizing community contributors to Logansport, the state or the nation. Last year’s inaugural citizen of the year was actor Greg Kinnear, a Logansport native.

“In Paul, Logansport has always had someone who found ways to not only be a part of the community, but to support it and leave it better in some way than he found it,” Mayor Dave Kitchell said.

Kroeger’s family founded its funeral home in 1875 in Logansport. After attending Washington University in St. Louis, he began working for Amtrak. When he returned to Logansport in the early 1980s, he was the centrifugal force involved in securing a steam train and coaches for the first Iron Horse Festival in 1981. Later, he was a festival general chair and served for several years as the Train Committee chair.

Kroeger also was tabbed as one of the first members of the Logansport Redevelopment Commission which defined the initial Tax Increment Financing districts in the city and allocated funding for various infrastructure projects. He has been active in the Logansport Rotary Club. He most recently served as president of the Logansport Historic District Commission.

The Citizen of the Week is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office and recognizes Logansport natives or residents who contribute to the community or are recognized for their achievements. Recipients received a certificate of appreciation from the city and a $20 gift certificate.

Since its inception, 100 current or former residents have been recognized.
