Recycling District offers alternatives to traditional wrapping paper

Last Updated on January 4, 2018 by cassnetwork

Christmas is right around the corner. I’m sure most of you have already started shopping, checking off wish list items for your loved ones. Before you start wrapping all those treasures, I want to suggest an alternative to store bought wrapping paper.

Although the pretty wrapping paper from stores is main stream, it’s always a good idea to avoid the purchase of single use paper. Some wrapping paper is recyclable, but most of it is not. Foiled paper cannot be put in the recycling bin as well as most ribbons and bows. Some paper is made with low grade fiber and is at the end of its life. There are also types of commercially manufactured wrapping paper that contain mixed components other than paper fiber, and it cannot be recycled either.

To help with the confusion, I want to offer alternatives to single use paper. These options will not only reduce a large amount of waste, but they are a good way to reuse what we already have in our home without spending any money.

Newspaper: Most of us have access to a newspaper. Don’t throw it out. Consider wrapping your presents in newspaper. Besides providing the newspaper a second life, it’s always a great topic of discussion, and it’s a great way to tell others to save the planet. After the chaos of Christmas morning, the newspaper can be recycled.

Newspaper inserts: During this time of year, holiday newspaper inserts are full of color. The inserts are great for smaller items and it actually looks like wrapping paper.

Used/Scrapped fabric: Do you have extra fabric lying around? Or perhaps old clothing that is headed to the trash can? Try using it as gift wrap.

Reusable bags/Gift bags: A great gift for anyone is a reusable bag. If you are giving more than one gift, put them all in a reusable bag. Not only will the bag be a nice surprise, but they’ll get to unveil all the goodies inside. Gift bags are always a good idea. Most people keep those to use for other occasions.

Decorative storage boxes: This is another great way to give two gifts in one.

If you definitely want to use wrapping paper for certain gifts, consider keeping the left over paper for other projects, such as, kid crafts, scrapbooking, décor, book covers, and try crafting your own ribbons and bows for next year. Just because something isn’t recyclable, doesn’t mean it can’t be reused in other ways.
