State Rep. Bill Friend (R-Macy) presents his legislation to the House Committee on Courts and Criminal Code on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, at the Statehouse in Indianapolis. Friend’s legislation would expand access to CBD oil in Indiana.

STATEHOUSE – The House Committee on Courts and Criminal Code today voted in favor of State Rep. Bill Friend’s (R-Macy) bill that would expand access to CBD oil in Indiana by legalizing industrial hemp products.

Friend’s proposal would allow products, like CBD oil, derived from industrial hemp to be sold and purchased in Indiana if certain conditions are met. CBD oil products would need to meet testing, registration and labeling requirements, and not contain more than 0.3 percent THC.

“Currently, there is some confusion surrounding the legality of CBD oil in Indiana and this bill would help clear that up,” Friend said. “These products have shown to provide relief to a wide range of people with Parkinson’s, fibromyalgia, anxiety and other disorders when other medications are not effective or cause harmful side effects.”

According to Friend, these products do not cause the psychoactive high associated with marijuana, and this legislation would not legalize medical marijuana.

House Bill 1214 can now move to the House floor for further consideration. For more information, visit iga.in.gov.

Rep. Bill Friend (R-Macy) represents House District 23, which includes portions of Cass, Fulton and Miami counties.
